12-volt battery test safety
A nominal 12 volts can still deliver enough current to create severe sparks, burns and hot tools. Battery gas and acid add separate risks.

Stop before testing if
- The battery is swollen, cracked, leaking, frozen, unusually hot or strongly odorous.
- You see smoke, melted wiring, fuel leakage or active sparks.
- The battery or remote terminals cannot be reached without leaning near moving engine parts.
- The vehicle is a hybrid or EV and the owner’s manual does not clearly identify an accessible 12-volt test point.
- You are unsure which meter socket or function to use.
Basic protective steps
- Work in a ventilated area and wear eye protection.
- Remove rings, watches and metal jewelry.
- Keep flames, cigarettes, sparks and metal tools away from battery posts.
- Set the parking brake and use Park or Neutral as the owner’s manual specifies.
- Inspect leads for damage. Black lead goes in COM; red in V/Ω.
- Use DC volts. Never put the meter in amps mode across the battery.
- Attach clips and route leads away from belts and fans before starting.

- Disconnecting a battery cable with the engine running.
- Shorting terminals or bridging a starter relay.
- Opening or probing orange hybrid/EV high-voltage equipment.
- Repeated long cranking attempts.
- Crawling beneath a vehicle without professional lifting and support.
If acid contacts eyes or skin
Move away from the source and flush with plenty of clean water immediately. Follow the battery safety label and contact local emergency/poison services for current instructions. Do not delay care for eye exposure or significant burns.
Emergency judgment
If the vehicle stalls in traffic, shows smoke or burning odor, or has an actively damaged battery, prioritize moving people to safety and contacting emergency or roadside assistance. A website diagnosis is not appropriate in an active hazard.
