Step 1: does the engine crank?
Cranking means the starter is physically turning the engine. If you hear the normal repeating engine-turning sound but the engine never runs, the starter has already done its main job. Fuel, ignition, immobilizer or engine-control problems move higher on the list.
No sound at all
Check that the transmission is fully in Park or Neutral, or that the clutch is depressed as required. Observe whether dashboard lights remain normal. Battery voltage, terminal contact, the start switch, neutral-safety circuit and starter control can all prevent cranking.
Rapid clicking
The starter solenoid is engaging and releasing as available voltage collapses. Low battery charge and high resistance at battery connections are common causes. Record resting voltage and, if safe, the minimum during the attempt.
One click
A single click with no crank can involve the starter solenoid, motor, cables, engine ground or a battery that fails only under load. Do not name the starter until the battery and cable path are separated.
Slow cranking
Cold weather, low charge, reduced battery capacity, cable resistance, oil viscosity and excessive starter load can all slow the engine. Cranking minimum plus a battery CCA test is the most efficient next pair of checks.
Cranks normally but does not start
If the 12-volt readings remain supported and the engine turns at normal speed, repeated battery swaps will not solve a missing fuel, spark, compression, security authorization or engine-position signal. Limit each attempt to the owner’s manual recommendation and seek diagnosis.
Starts and then dies
Check running voltage before assuming the alternator. Security systems, fuel delivery and severe air-metering faults can also stop an engine shortly after it fires. A battery warning light that remains on plus little charging rise makes the charging path more relevant.
Stop immediately for smoke, burning smell, fuel odor, sparks, damaged wiring, overheating cables or a leaking/swollen battery. Move away and use appropriate emergency or roadside assistance.

Why won't my car start even with a jump?
The jumper connection may be poor, the donor source may be insufficient, or the problem may involve the starter circuit, security system, fuel, ignition or mechanical condition rather than simple battery charge.
How long should I keep trying to start it?
Do not crank continuously. Follow the owner’s manual; repeated long attempts can overheat the starter and cables and can damage other components.
Does normal cranking rule out the battery?
It makes a severe starting-current problem less likely, but low voltage can still affect control modules. Measure the minimum and inspect warning messages.
