Start with the battery fully charged
A parasitic-drain investigation based on an already undercharged battery creates confusion. Charge with the correct charger, allow the battery to rest and obtain a load/conductance result. If the battery cannot pass capacity testing, replace that known fault before chasing a small draw.
Confirm the charging stage
Measure engine-off, running and loaded voltage. Normal voltage at one moment does not prove alternator current capacity, but a clear failure to rise on a conventional system is an efficient lead.
Consider how the vehicle is used
Frequent short trips, long parked periods, cold weather and many wake-ups from connected apps can leave a healthy battery chronically undercharged. Stop-start vehicles also require the correct AGM or EFB replacement type and may require battery registration.
When parasitic-draw testing makes sense
Only after the battery and charging system pass. Modern modules may remain awake for 15–60 minutes or longer, so measuring current too early produces a false alarm. Series-current testing also risks blowing the meter fuse or waking modules.
Never move the red lead to an amps socket and place the meter across the battery. A clamp meter or a technician following vehicle-specific sleep procedures is safer.
