A conventional charging system commonly raises terminal voltage into roughly the 13.5–14.8 V area. More important than one universal number is whether voltage rises above the rested battery and remains supported under load.
This old test can create voltage spikes, damage electronics and cause sparking around battery gas. Use a meter without removing a cable.
Step-by-step procedure
- Inspect the battery and belt area with the engine off.
- Set the meter to DC volts with leads in COM and V/Ω.
- Measure at the battery posts and record the engine-off baseline.
- Secure the leads away from moving parts.
- Start the engine and record running voltage.
- Add headlights and high blower; record loaded voltage.

What a voltmeter cannot see
An alternator can show acceptable DC voltage and still have weak current output or excessive diode ripple. A professional test can add alternator amperage, AC ripple and loaded cable voltage drop.
