Start with two battery readings
A single engine-off reading tells you whether the battery appears charged. It does not prove that the battery can deliver starting current. A useful home screen therefore has two stages:
- Resting voltage: engine and charger off, surface charge reduced.
- Cranking minimum: the lowest voltage seen during a normal start attempt.
How to test safely
- Inspect the battery. Stop for swelling, cracks, leaks, freezing, unusual heat or strong odor.
- Switch the meter to DC volts. Put the black lead in COM and the red lead in V/Ω—not the high-current amps socket.
- With the engine off, touch red to the positive post and black to the negative post.
- Record the resting voltage. If the battery just charged, remove surface charge first.
- If it is safe to do so, secure the leads away from moving parts and capture the minimum during one normal start.

These are screening bands, not universal replacement specifications. AGM batteries may rest higher, cold weather changes performance, and modern vehicles can remain electrically awake after shutdown.
Why voltage can look good on a bad battery
A battery may reach a normal open-circuit voltage but have little usable capacity. Internal resistance can then make voltage collapse when the starter demands current. That is why StartVitals never calls a battery healthy from resting voltage alone.
If the battery is fully charged but cranking is weak, request a conductance or load test that reports measured CCA. Inspect and clean the terminal connections at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Is 12.2 volts a bad car battery?
It shows a low state of charge, but it does not by itself prove the battery needs replacement. Charge it fully, let it rest and retest; then use a load/CCA test if it falls again.
Can I test the battery immediately after driving?
You can measure it, but recent charging may leave surface charge and make the resting result look higher. Reduce surface charge and allow the system to settle for a cleaner baseline.
Should I measure the posts or cable clamps?
Start at the lead battery posts when accessible. A large difference between post and clamp readings under load may indicate connection resistance, but detailed voltage-drop testing is better left to a proper procedure.
Does a jump start prove the battery is bad?
No. It increases suspicion of low battery voltage, but poor connections, insufficient jumper contact and other faults can produce similar behavior.
