Temperature, battery chemistry, meter accuracy, recent charging and smart alternator strategy can move these numbers. Your vehicle service information takes priority.

Why 12.6 volts is not a health certificate

Open-circuit voltage mainly reflects state of charge. It does not measure how much current the battery can deliver. A sulfated or internally damaged battery may display a normal voltage and still collapse under starter load.

Why “14 volts means a good alternator” is incomplete

Running voltage confirms that some charging rise was present. It does not measure maximum alternator current, AC ripple, belt slip, intermittent regulator faults or cable voltage loss. Newer controlled-charging systems can intentionally operate close to battery voltage under some conditions.

The useful question is not “is 12.3 volts good?” It is “was 12.3 volts measured after resting, during crank or while running?”

Frequently asked questions

What does 12.2 volts mean?

On a rested conventional lead-acid battery it indicates low charge. Charge before deciding whether the battery has failed.

Is 13 volts enough while the engine runs?

It may be borderline for a conventional system but can occur intentionally on smart-charging vehicles. Compare with resting voltage, electrical load and manufacturer procedure.

Is 15 volts too high?

Some controlled systems can briefly charge near 15 V, especially in cold conditions. A sustained reading above about 15.3 V deserves confirmation because overcharging can damage the battery and electronics.
