Symptoms that justify starter-circuit testing
- A single click with no engine rotation.
- Intermittent no-crank despite a charged, tested battery.
- Slow crank with a battery that passes capacity testing.
- Grinding, free-spinning or abnormal starter noise.
- Cranking improves after connection or ground work.
Test before replacing
First verify battery state of charge and measured capacity. Next inspect terminal tightness and corrosion. Then measure voltage drop on the positive and ground sides during crank. Only after supply and control are proven should starter current draw decide the motor.
What voltage sag means
A low minimum at the battery says the 12-volt system is under heavy stress. It cannot distinguish a weak battery from excessive starter load. A normal battery-post voltage with poor voltage at the starter would instead point toward cable or connection loss—but that test requires safer access and a vehicle-specific procedure.
Starter access often requires lifting. Use a qualified technician unless the vehicle is supported with the correct rated equipment on a stable surface and you have the required training.

Rapid clicking more commonly indicates collapsing voltage from low charge or a poor high-current connection. Test the battery and terminals first.

Yes. Worn contacts, brushes, heat and control-circuit faults can be intermittent, but battery connections can behave the same way.
Can a bad starter drain the battery?
